Royal Palm Care
The Royal Palm tree grows rapidly in full sun and moist, fertile soils. Roystonea regia can tolerate partial shade. The Royal Palm does best in slightly acidic and slightly alkaline soils. However, it can withstand poor, sand and clay soils. Higly alkaline soils should be avoided. The fronds can become frizzled in these soils.
The majestic tree grows well on the beach and near the ocean. It can tolerate periodic flooding.
The Royal Palm tree is drought tolerant. It can thrive in hot deserts.
Roystonea Elata can withstand high winds. The fronds will break off, but it will recover.
The Royal Palm is cold hardy to 28 F for short spells.
Royal Palms are sensitive to scales, royal palm bugs, leaf skeletonizer, giant palm weevil and ganoderma butt rot. Properly selected insecticides can help to prevent and manage these pests and diseases.
